Lighting Design 2017
The IPD furniture and object electives have been very popular over the years with both IPD students and those from other disciplines and along the way we've had many requests about a lighting option. In response to this we will deliver a lighting design elective in first semester 2017.
A special feature of this elective is that UTS industrial design graduates Nick and Sarah, who are the founders one of Australia’s most exciting design brands, will be the industry partner. This means that you have a chance to design a table light that could end up in production. You can view their work and who they are by visiting; www.designbythem.com
The project is to design and develop an innovative table light, the design should be able to fit into the DesignByThem philosophy and their existing range of products.
This context is not one of mass production or large investment in tooling, instead, this project requires clever solutions for small batch production using existing technology that highlight your creative and technical problem solving skills. You will be required to research opportunities and develop a new product design for a table light. There are no restrictions on materials or lighting sources other than the design must sit comfortably in the context that DesignByThem locates itself.
The subject will begin with a briefing at the DesignByThem studio. Nick and Sarah will be on hand at key moments throughout the elective to provide feedback on your work. The weekly studio will be managed by Ben Baxter. Ben is one half of McDermott/Baxter, an internationally recognised lighting design studio, you can view their work by visiting; www.mcdermottbaxter.com.
This subject will be capped at 15 students, if you are interested email Berto.
