Roderick Walden undertakes research into the contemporary methods and practice of professional industrial design. His principal areas of research interest lie in professional practice, design methods, expertise in design and design thinking.
He has previously worked as a product designer and production engineer for a range of manufacturers in the commercial office furniture industry, including such international companies as Herman Miller in the US and Wilkhahn and K&N in Germany and his design consultancy, Walden Design Pty Ltd, formed in 2003, designed a range of products for the Australian manufacturing industry.
Among his original creative works (exhibited prototypes) are the MTB Multi-tool Design (2008), Office desktop accessories (2008), the GRW Cooling Vest(2009), all with S. Lie, and the MTB DMLS Crank Arm (2010) as part of the CCDP-sponsored Digifacture project, which he co-curated with Berto Pandolfo.
Roderick is currently completing his masters (by research) degree through UTS on self-initiated product design. He is passionate about his role as a teacher, the technical work of design and the meaning behind the connections designers make with other areas of knowledge to solve problems, innovate and learn.
